Eric Powell’s Goon is like a cross between Hellboy and Looney Tunes. The Goon and his buddy Frankie are mob enforcers who protect their town from an evil Magician and his army of zombies. It’s one of the only titles I’ve read that has me laughing hysterically with its politically incorrect humor while at the same time moving me with its poignant drama. There are some incredible recurring characters in the Goon, including an alcoholic talking spider, an ultra violent group of criminal children, and a surly old gypsy woman among others. It doesn’t hurt that Eric Powell’s art is some of the most original and gorgeous art around. One of my favorite books for years, the Goon comes with my highest recommendation.
